Irreplaceable! Palm oil excels in all aspects: Efficiency, Productivity, Versatility, and Price.<\/em><\/p>\n

JAKARTA \u2013 \u00a0Vegetable oils have long become an important part of human life, perhaps since time immemorial. Not only a source of fat in foods, the vegetable oils also play a significant role as raw materials in the industries of oleochemical and renewable energy, such as biofuel.<\/p>\n

Along the history, human civilizations have seen various kinds of vegetable oils from various kinds of oil crops. Among the crops include oil palm, soybean, rapeseed, sunflower, coconut, olive, peanut, cotton seed, and corn (PASPI, 2024).<\/p>\n

Of all types of vegetable oils, there are four kinds that dominate the global market: Palm oil, soybean, rapeseed, and sunflower. The four vegetable oils contribute around 90 percent of total production and consumption in the world (PASPI, 2023).<\/p>\n

Least land, Highest Productivity<\/strong><\/p>\n

Data from the USDA (2024) shows that soybeans as the oil-producing crop had the largest planted area in 2023, reaching 139.7 million hectares. It is followed by rapeseed with 41.5 million hectares and sunflowers with 28.2 million hectares.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, oil palm plantations only cover 26.9 million hectares, the lowest among all vegetable oils. But interestingly, in terms of productivity, palm oil outperforms other vegetable oils with production of 88.4 million tons. It far exceeds soybean oil (62.4 million tons), rapeseed (34 million tons), and sunflower (21.8 million tons). The fact shows that even though its land area is much less than others, the oil palm is able to produce more oil than its rivals.<\/p>\n

Six Advantages of Palm Oil<\/strong><\/p>\n

Based on the Journal Analysis of Palm Oil Strategic Issues Vol. IV No. 26 (PASPI, 2024), there are at least six main advantages that make palm oil as the main choice in the global market:<\/p>\n

  1. Highest Productivity Per Hectare<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    The oil palm is known as the most efficient vegetable oil crop in terms of land use. Its average productivity can reach 3.36 tons of oil (CPO + CPKO) per hectare, far exceeding other crops, such as sunflower (0.78 tons\/ha), rapeseed (0.74 tons\/ha), and soybean (0.47 tons\/ha). It means that to produce the same volume of oil, oil palm requires much less land areas if compared to other vegetable oils.<\/p>\n

    1. Biggest Contributor at Global Market<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Palm oil contributes about 39.5 percent of the world’s total vegetable oil production. Due to its high productivity, fulfilling the global need for vegetable oils at a large scale can be more easily realized through the production of palm oil throughout the year at cheaper price. This is one of reasons why many large industries choose palm oil as their main raw material.<\/p>\n

      1. Stable Supply All Year<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        Oil palm trees start producing fruits after about four years and are able to produce consistently every two weeks until they reach the age of 25\u201330 years old. Such advantage makes the supply of palm oil relatively stable and sustainable throughout the year. It cannot be emulated by other vegetable oils, which are highly dependent on the season.<\/p>\n

        1. Cheaper Price<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          The price of palm oil is known more affordable compared to the price of other vegetable oils. As a result, it becomes more accessible among the general public and can function as a strategic commodity in stabilizing the price of global vegetable oils. When the price of other vegetable oils increases, demand for palm oil increases, thereby reducing price fluctuations (Kojima et al., 2016; Cui & Martin, 2017).<\/p>\n

          1. Wide Industrial Applications <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

            One of the main attractions of palm oil is its versatility. It is widely used in various types of food products (cooking oil, margarine, chocolate, biscuits), oleochemical industry (cosmetics, soap, skincare, cleaners), renewable energy (biodiesel, palm gasoline, palm aviation fuel). Almost the entire global community uses palm oil and its derivative products in their daily lives, either directly or indirectly. (Shigetomi et al., 2020).<\/p>\n

            1. Contribute To Climate Change Mitigation<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

              The palm oil does not only excel in economic side, but also in terms of ecological benefits. Having the morphological structure of tall and large tree trunk, oil palm plays an important role in absorbing carbon dioxide (CO\u2082) from the atmosphere through the process of its photosynthesis. Throughout its life cycle of around 30 years, oil palm functions as a natural carbon sink (PASPI Monitor, 2023).<\/p>\n

              With high productivity, stable supply, affordable prices, and wide range of benefits and applications, the palm oil has become an inherent part of modern life. Such advantages make palm oil very difficult to replace. It is indeed irreplaceable. It is no exaggeration to say: No Palm Oil, No Life.<\/p>\n
