BRUSSELS – Indonesia said on Saturday that free trade negotiations with the European Union, which have been ongoing for nine years, are expected to be concluded by the end of June 2025.<\/p>\n
Airlangga Hartarto, the chief economic minister for Southeast Asia\u2019s biggest economy, met with EU Commissioner for Trade Maros Sefcovic in Brussels on Friday (06\/06\/2025).<\/p>\n
\u201cIndonesia and the European Union have agreed to conclude outstanding issues and we are ready to announce a conclusion of substantial negotiations by the end of June 2025,\u201d Airlangga Hartarto said in a statement.<\/p>\n
Indonesia will get zero tariffs for 80% of its export products to the EU and removal of non-tariff barriers, as it pushes for bigger market access for footwear, garments, palm oil and fishery products, Airlanga told a press conference later on Saturday.<\/p>\n
The EU has discussed Jakarta\u2019s rules on mandatory use of local content in products sold in Indonesian market, the automotive industry, trade of critical minerals and investment facilities, Airlangga said.<\/p>\n
Indonesia and the EU have previously disagreed on EU trade rules for products with potential links to deforestation that could affect Indonesian palm oil.<\/p>\n
Airlangga said the bloc\u2019s deforestation rules were not part of the free trade negotiations, but Sefcovic had \u201cpromised to provide special treatment towards Indonesia regarding deforestation.\u201d He did not elaborate.<\/p>\n
Denis Chaibi, EU ambassador to Indonesia, said that talks were ongoing and \u201cwe will communicate in details when we have an outcome.\u201d Chaibi did not respond to a question about the special treatment.<\/p>\n
The EU is Indonesia\u2019s fifth-biggest trade partner, with total trade between the two reaching 27.3 billion euros ($31.11 billion) last year, according to the EU. Exports from the bloc were worth 9.7 billion euros in 2024, and it imported 17.5 billion euros\u2019 worth from Indonesia.<\/p>\n
Indonesian exports to the bloc could increase by more than 50% within three to four years after the trade deal takes effect, Airlangga said.<\/p>\n
Indonesian officials have been motivated to accelerate talks on free trade agreements, keen to diversify the country\u2019s export destinations as they deal with U.S. tariff challenges.<\/p>\n
Crucial Amid Uncertainty<\/strong><\/p>\n Meanwhile in Jakarta, Trade Minister Budi Santoso said\u00a0 Indonesia is close to finalizing trade deals with the European Union (EU) and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) by year-end to expand market access and attract foreign investment. The two agreements are the Indonesia-EU Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) and the Indonesia-EAEU Free Trade Agreement (FTA).<\/p>\n The minister said the agreements are crucial amid global trade uncertainty, with the potential to diversify Indonesia\u2019s export markets and provide alternatives for products impacted by the United States tariff policies.<\/p>\n \u201cNegotiations are progressing rapidly, and we are targeting completion this year. We will ensure the benefits can be felt by businesses and the public at large,\u201d he said in a statement.<\/p>\n The deals aim to lower tariff and non-tariff barriers on key Indonesian exports such as palm oil, agricultural products, textiles, and electronics, while also covering investment, sustainability, and support for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).<\/p>\n Talks with the EU began in 2016, while negotiations with the EAEU, comprising Russia, Kazakhstan, Belarus, Armenia and Kyrgyzstan, were launched in 2022.
