Let\u2019s find out the real facts!<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>MYTH:<\/strong><br \/>\nOil palm is a water-intensive plant and causes drought.<\/p>\n<p><strong>FACT:<\/strong><br \/>\nThe oil palm is a water-efficient plant and even significantly contributes to hydrological conservation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Comparison of Plant Water Requirements<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Evapotranspiration Rate<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The evaporation process of water into the atmosphere from the soil and plants shows that the oil palm uses less water if compared to many other plants.<\/p>\n<p>Data shows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Lamtoro &amp; Bamboo: 3,000 mm\/year<\/li>\n<li>Acacia: 2,400 mm\/year<\/li>\n<li>Sengon: 2,300 mm\/year<\/li>\n<li>Oil palm: Only 1,104 mm\/year (Source: Coster, 1938)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Transpiration Rate<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Transpiration is the process of releasing water vapor from leaves. Again, oil palm shows the lowest level:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Rubber: 2.44 mm\/year<\/li>\n<li>Cocoa: 0.5 \u2013 2.2 mm\/year<\/li>\n<li>Primary forest: 1.0 \u2013 1.7 mm\/year<\/li>\n<li>Oil palm: Only 0.46 mm\/year<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>(Source: Kobayashi et al., Kohler et al., McJannet et al., Pradiko et al.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Water Footprint <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Total water used to produce one ton of agricultural products:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cotton: \u00b1 4,000 m\u00b3<\/li>\n<li>Sunflower: \u00b1 3,500 m\u00b3<\/li>\n<li>Coconut: \u00b1 3,000 m\u00b3<\/li>\n<li>Rapeseed: \u00b1 2,400 m\u00b3<\/li>\n<li>Soybean: \u00b1 2,100 m\u00b3<\/li>\n<li>Palm oil: Only \u00b1 1,100 m\u00b3<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Even the water used by oil palm mostly comes from rainwater, not irrigation or groundwater which can cause a deficit of water resource.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Water Conservation Mechanism by Oil Palm <\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Natural Canopy:<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The thick and comprehensive structure of the oil palm fronds is able to hold rainwater and prevent erosion due to water run-off.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><strong>Deep and Wide Roots:<\/strong><br \/>\nThe fibrous root system of the oil palm helps to absorb rainwater maximally and stores water reserves in the soil. It prevents drought and maintains stable soil moisture.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Conclusion: It is wrong to accuse oil palm as heavy water-user!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Data from various studies prove that oil palm:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Has the lowest level of water requirements<\/li>\n<li>Very efficient in maintaining groundwater reserves<\/li>\n<li>Plays an active role in water conservation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So, the accusation that oil palm causes drought is false or just a myth.<\/p>\n<p><em>Coster (1938).
