MUMBAI \u2013 The Solvent Extractors Association of India (SEA), the Asian Palm Oil Alliance (APOA), and the Indonesian Palm Oil Association (GAPKI) announced at the SEA AGM & GlobOil India Conference that they had signed a trilateral Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to deepen cooperation on trade, sustainability, innovation, and market development across the palm oil value chain in Asia.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

India alone meets more than 60% of its vegetable oil needs through imports, which are mostly palm oil from Indonesia as the largest supplier of palm oil during the last ten years. In August 2025 alone, India\u2019s palm oil imports increased nearly 16% to 990,528 tons, the highest level in over a year, underscoring the commodity’s critical role in meeting India’s vegetable oil needs. It is based on such market condition that the MoU between SEA, APOA, and GAPKI was signed with the aim of strengthening economic ties, supporting responsible growth, and ensuring a more stable palm oil supply chain across the Asian region.<\/p>\n

“SEA welcomes this partnership with GAPKI and APOA as an important step to deepen India’s ties with Indonesia and other Asian partners,” said Shri Sanjeev Asthana, President of SEA.<\/p>\n

“This MoU will strengthen India’s access to high-quality, affordable palm oil, while enabling Indian stakeholders to benefit from Indonesia’s expertise on sustainable palm oil production. This agreement will also create opportunities for trade and technical cooperation, bringing greater stability to India’s vegetable oil sector,” he said.<\/p>\n

“The signed MoU stands as a milestone for palm oil consuming countries across Asian region,” said Atul Chaturvedi, Chairman of APOA. “Working with GAPKI and SEA, APOA will help ensure security of supplies, stronger regional cooperation, and greater consumer awareness. Our focus is to represent the voice of consumers in Asia while simultaneously advancing sustainability and inclusive growth in the palm oil trade,” he said.<\/p>\n

Dr. B.V. Mehta, the Executive Director of SEA, and Secretary-General of APOA said that the MoU represents a significant step forward in fostering collaborations among key palm oil stakeholders in Asia. It does not only strengthen the security of Indian edible oils but also underscores shared commitment to sustainability, transparency, and innovation in the palm oil value chain.<\/p>\n

\u201cBy pooling joint efforts of SEA, GAPKI, and APOA, we can create a strong platform for knowledge sharing, policy dialogue, and market development that will benefit producers, consumers, and the entire region,\u201d said Dr. B.V. Mehta.<\/p>\n

This three-year agreement creates a strong framework for collaboration between SEA, APOA, and GAPKI, by focusing on the following goals:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Facilitating stakeholder interaction – Regular delegations and exchanges between Indonesia and APOA member countries.<\/li>\n
  2. Increasing trade through various platforms – Joint conferences, trade shows, and webinars to strengthen industry engagement.<\/li>\n
  3. Promoting the exchange of information and technical standards – sharing research, best practices, and expertise to improve industry standards.<\/li>\n
  4. Improving sustainability through joint projects – Collaborative initiatives aligned with the Indian Palm Oil Sustainability (IPOS) and Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil (ISPO) frameworks.<\/li>\n
  5. Raising consumer awareness – Addressing misconceptions and highlighting the role of palm oil in food security and responsible consumption.<\/li>\n
  6. Policy advocacy – Working with governments and regulators to reduce trade barriers and address regulatory challenges.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    GAPKI emphasized during the conference that palm oil plays a very important role in Indonesian economy based on the principles of sustainability. Indonesian palm oil industries are required to have ISPO (Indonesian sustainable palm oil) certification, implement forest conservation and responsible production. Based on the green principles, Indonesia aims to support India’s food security and climate goals. While challenges such as smallholder compliance remain, the partnership will create innovations and inclusive policies for a resilient supply chain.<\/p>\n

    \u201cIndia is one of Indonesia’s main export markets for palm oil and remains one of our most important partners,\u201d said Eddy Martono, Chairman of the Indonesian Palm Oil Association (GAPKI). \u201cAs one of the world’s largest palm oil producers, Indonesia is ready to collaborate with India, SEA, and APOA to meet consumer demand while promoting responsible and sustainable practices. This memorandum of understanding will also help raise public awareness of the industry’s positive contributions throughout the value chain, from upstream to downstream production,\u201d Eddy said.<\/p>\n

    Based on the MoU, GAPKI will support the Indian palm oil industry with technical knowledge and trade facilitation. GAPKI will also promote the economic and nutritional benefits of Indonesian palm oil in India, invite SEA and APOA as special guests at its events, and provide them financial assistance to promote sustainable palm oil. SEA and APOA will promote trade opportunities in India, facilitate networking for GAPKI members, and invite GAPKI to conferences and seminars held in India and other jurisdictions.<\/p>\n

    The MoU is valid for three years, and to ensure its implementation, a Joint Working Group will implement and monitor the areas of cooperation.
