<\/p>\nJAKARTA \u2013 Indonesia has reaffirmed its position as a leading country in the global efforts to mitigate the global climate change.<\/p>\n
Through the Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+) program, the government has successfully reduced emissions from the forestry and land use sectors, while simultaneously obtaining performance-based payments (RBPs) of US$340.7 million out of a total international commitment of US$499.8 million.<\/p>\n

The funding came from the Green Climate Fund (GCF) channeled through the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).<\/p>\n
The GCF assesses Indonesia’s achievements as reflecting transparent, collaborative governance and compliance with its Paris Agreement commitments.<\/p>\n
“This project demonstrates Indonesia’s leadership in global climate action and the GCF’s strategic role in supporting it,” said Hemant Mandal, Director of the GCF’s Asia and Pacific Department, on Monday (06\/10\/2025).<\/p>\n
Having a total forest cover of around 95.5 million hectares, Indonesia is targeting a FOLU Net Sink condition by 2030, where carbon absorption exceeds emissions.<\/p>\n
According to Forestry Minister Raja Juli Antoni, the REDD+ funds will be used to strengthen the management system of national forest, expand social forestry, and improve the governance of regional forests.<\/p>\n
“REDD+ funding is not just about climate, but also about environmental justice\u2014indigenous peoples and local communities should be the direct beneficiaries,” he said.<\/p>\n
From 2015 to 2024, Indonesia has managed to rehabilitate more than 2 million hectares of forests and lands, and has successfully reduced the \u200b\u200bforest and land fires by 19.6 percent.<\/p>\n
The moratorium on new plantation permits, peat protection, and the development of multi-enterprise forestry businesses have contributed to these achievements.<\/p>\n
Transparency and the National Emissions Monitoring System<\/strong><\/p>\n Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq emphasized that the success of REDD+ has proven that low-carbon development can go hand in hand with the sustainable economic growth.<\/p>\n \u201cThis is an important heritage for the next generation,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n The government has also strengthened the monitoring instruments, such as measurement, reporting, and verification (MRV), forest reference emission level (FREL), and the national registration system, which ensures credibility of data.<\/p>\n Besides, safeguards information system (SIS) can ensure the implementation of REDD+ based on the principles of inclusivity, gender fair, and and side with indigenous peoples.<\/p>\n Acting as the main manager of environment fund, the Environment Fund Management Board (BPDLH) distributes the REDD+ funding for activities of restoring forests, rehabilitating the critical and degraded land areas, and increasing the welfare of people living around the forests.<\/p>\n \u201cBPDLH functions as a bridge that connects international support and real actions on the ground. Our principle: Transparency and Accountability,\u201d said BPDLH President Director Joko Tri Haryanto.<\/p>\n Meanwhile, UNDP as a GCF-accredited institution assists the government in ensuring the effective use of REDD+ funds through training, safeguards development, and technical assistance at the national and regional levels.<\/p>\n “Indonesia’s REDD+ journey is not just about forests, but about people and our shared future,” said Sara Ferrer Olivella, UNDP Indonesia Resident Representative.<\/p>\n Ahead of the COP30 Climate Change Conference, Indonesia is preparing its second Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) for the 2031\u20132035 period, with an ambitious target of reducing emissions by 60 percent compared to 2019.<\/p>\n A new phase of REDD+ funding began with a Kick-off Meeting for the development of the Concept Note and Funding Proposal in Jakarta on August 12, 2025.<\/p>\n The synergy between the Ministry of Environment, the Ministry of Forestry, the Environmental Impact Management Agency (BPDLH), and UNDP confirms that climate change mitigation can go hand in hand with economic equity and community welfare.
