SAMARINDA \u2013 The palm oil industry has entered a new phase in its commitment to realizing a more inclusive and equitable principle in the industry. Solidaridad and the Sustainable Palm Oil Labor Network (JAGASAWITAN), a collaboration between the Indonesian Palm Oil Workers Union Network (JAPBUSI) and the Indonesian Palm Oil Association (GAPKI), have officially launched a multi-stakeholder synergy focused on strengthening the role of women in the palm oil sector.<\/p>\n

The initiative is implemented through the program of POWERRR (Women and Palm Oil Equality through Resources, Rights, and Representation in Indonesia), with East Kalimantan province, specifically the Paser and East Kutai Regencies, as national pilot areas.<\/p>\n

The primary goal of the program is to create an inclusive work model that upholds gender equality, women’s protection, and fair labor practices throughout the supply chain of Indonesia\u2019s palm oil industries.<\/p>\n

Sumarjono Saragih, President of JAGASAWITAN and Head of GAPKI’s Human Resources Development Division, fully supports the initiative. He emphasized that while the palm oil industry is a vital pillar of the national economy, the sector must not ignore the social challenges.<\/p>\n

“This initiative is a concrete step towards building multi-stakeholder synergy. GAPKI is open to collaboration with all parties, including Solidaridad. We want to ensure that equality of gender and justice is seriously enforced in the palm oil sector. The rights of women workers must be respected, protected, and guaranteed against violence,” Sumarjono said.<\/p>\n

He added that labor unions play a crucial role as drivers of change at the plantation level, not merely as partners in social dialogue. “Through the POWERRR program, we will strengthen the capacity of unions to integrate a gender perspective into Collective Labor Agreements (CLAs) and mechanism of protection against violence at workplaces,” he said.<\/p>\n

The POWERRR program is designed to accommodate and empower 3,500 women in the palm oil supply chain of East Kalimantan province. Of the 3,500 women, 1,500 are female farmers, and 2,000 are plantation female workers.<\/p>\n

All participants will receive financial literacy training from a consortium of partners including Syngenta, Solidaridad, Perempuan Mahardika, and the Mulawarman University Center for Gender Studies (PSG Unmul).<\/p>\n

In addition, female farmers will receive Good Agriculture Practices (GAP) training, while female workers will be trained in the safe use of chemicals, waste management, and child protection policies.<\/p>\n

The launching of the program was attended by various strategic stakeholders, including representatives from the Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection Agency (PPPA), the Manpower Agency, and the Plantation Agency from the provincial to district levels. Also present were representatives from GAPKI, the F-HUKATAN labor union, 15 palm oil companies, and civil society organizations.<\/p>\n

With this multi-stakeholder synergy, POWERRR is expected to become a blueprint for the transformation of the Indonesian palm oil industry towards a more inclusive, equitable, and sustainable direction, while strengthening palm oil’s position as a strategic commodity that is friendly to women and the environment.
