JAKARTA \u2013 Palm oil is often promoted as the top commodity of Indonesia. However, not all regions in the country have land areas suitable for conversion to oil palm plantations. Those regions include Papua. The Head of the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), Arif Satria, emphasized that oil palm development cannot be applied uniformly across all regions.<\/p>\n

“Oil palm is not suitable for all regions, including Papua,” Arif Satria said during a public discussion and research dissemination entitled “Should Papua Be Planted with Oil Palm?” in Jakarta on Wednesday (28\/01\/2026). According to Arif, BRIN is currently conducting a mapping of land areas across Indonesia regarding their suitability for cultivation of certain plants or commodities.<\/p>\n

The map is designed to serve as the foundation for Indonesia’s policies of agricultural development in the future. But Arif said that ecological suitability alone is not enough. Social aspects are also the determining factor in developing plantations, especially in regions with strong characters of indigenous communities like Papua.<\/p>\n

“It may be ecologically suitable, but not necessarily socially appropriate,” Arif said. Therefore, strategies for developing agricultural and plantation growth centers should take into account the social acceptance of the surrounding communities in areas of cultivation.<\/p>\n

He stated that social mapping requires the involvement of sociologists and anthropologists to understand the relationship between society and their living space. Arif said such approach aligns with the framework of sustainability science, which accommodates local knowledge and wisdom and does not rely solely on natural laws considered universal.<\/p>\n

“Sustainability science seeks to understand how society interprets its environment. Here, human ecology and social ecology are closely intertwined and mutually supportive,” he said. Arif believes that economic transformation in Papua cannot be separated from social transformation. A balance between economic, social, and ecological interests should be seen as the key factors.<\/p>\n

If economic rationality is too dominant, ecological damage and social conflict are inevitable. Conversely, the dominance of an ecological approach without considering economic aspect can result in stagnation. To deal with the complexity, Arif advocates a transdisciplinary approach involving various scientific backgrounds.<\/p>\n

This approach is expected to provide more comprehensive policy options for the central and regional governments in determining the direction of Papua’s development. (*)<\/p>\n
