MAGELANG \u2014 President Prabowo Subianto has stated that his government will develop a number of renewable energy production centers to process palm oil and used cooking oil (UCO) into bioavtur or sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). It is part of the government\u2019s program to deal with the potential energy crisis caused by the geopolitical conflict in the Middle East between USA-Israel and Iran and to realize national energy self-sufficiency.<\/p>\n

Speaking during the inauguration of an electric commercial vehicle assembly plant in Magelang, Central Java, on Thursday (09\/04\/2026), the President said that aviation fuel (avtur) can now be produced from palm oil and used cooking oil (UCO), which are abundant in Indonesia as the world\u2019s largest producer of palm oil.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow, we can produce the aviation fuel from palm oil and used cooking oil, which are abundant in our country. We\u2019ll develop processing centers and refineries to process these materials into aviation fuel. We will invest heavily in this sector,” Prabowo said.<\/p>\n

Previously, in a press conference at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Wednesday (08\/04\/2026), Prabowo stated that the global crisis caused by international conflict has actually presented an opportunity for Indonesia to accelerate the development of new and renewable energy (NRE) to strengthen national energy security.<\/p>\n

To achieve the energy self-sufficiency, President also promoted the development of biofuels from cassava and corn as alternatives to diesel and gasoline. By developing those alternative energy sources, the country expects to reduce fuel imports, especially the aviation fuel.<\/p>\n

Prabowo believes Indonesia has a strong economic foundation to realize its energy security that will in turn allow the country to weather through the global energy crisis.<\/p>\n

He believes Indonesia is relatively safe from the direct impact of disruptions to global energy supplies due to its independent energy sources.<\/p>\n

“After reviewing the situation, it turns out that actually we have quite strong economic strength to deal with the global crisis,” Prabowo said.<\/p>\n

New economic opportunities and <\/strong>energy transition<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Although the production capacity has not yet been detailed, the government stated that this project will be accelerated in stages over the next few years. This effort is also expected to open new economic opportunities and strengthen the domestic fuel supply chain.<\/p>\n

In addition to SAF production, the government is promoting energy efficiency and accelerating electrification in various sectors.<\/p>\n

The goal is to reduce fuel imports and lower carbon emissions while maintaining energy supplies amid global uncertainty.<\/p>\n

Prabowo emphasized the importance of energy conservation and transitioning to renewable sources as strategic steps to address supply challenges in the coming months.<\/p>\n

Pertamina’s SAF production<\/strong><\/h2>\n

PT Pertamina Patra Niaga, a subsidiary of state-owned energy company Pertamina Group, has produced SAF from used cooking oil and supplied it for the first commercial flight on the Jakarta-Bali route in August 2025.<\/p>\n

Pertamina stated that distribution is running smoothly, with raw materials being collected from the public, restaurants, and small businesses.<\/p>\n

The development of the SAF ecosystem is considered to support emission reduction targets and open new economic opportunities for raw material collection businesses.<\/p>\n

The global SAF market is expected to grow rapidly in the coming years, driven by the net-zero target and emission reduction policies.<\/p>\n

Waste-based SAFs such as used cooking oil can reduce greenhouse gas emissions while being compatible with existing aircraft engines and airport infrastructure.<\/p>\n

BPH Migas data shows that the current national aviation fuel stock is 388,600 kiloliters, with daily consumption at 13,800 kiloliters. This means the national stock is sufficient for about 28 days. (*)<\/p>\n
