YOGYAKARTA –\u00a0 The Indonesian Palm Oil Association (GAPKI) and the Indonesian Journalists Association (PWI) held a journalistic workshop in Yogyakarta as part of efforts to strengthen synergy between the palm oil industries and the media in educating the general public on governance of sustainable and environmentally-friendly palm oil, which significantly contributes to national economy.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The event has become a strategic forum to increase journalists\u2019 understanding on the important role of Indonesia\u2019s palm oil industries as a major contributor of foreign exchange, provider of job opportunities, and the pillar of national food and energy security.<\/p>\n

GAPKI highlights palm role and Karhutla challenges<\/strong><\/h2>\n

GAPKI Chairman Eddy Martono explained that the choice of Yogyakarta as the workshop venue held special significance. Although the region has no oil palm plantations, the people of Yogyakarta still benefit from palm oil-based products used across various industrial sectors, including the batik industry and in everyday consumer goods.<\/p>\n

On this occasion, Eddy also highlighted the challenges the industry faces regarding the management of forest and land fires (Karhutla). He noted that GAPKI has actively involved in firefighting efforts, including operations outside company concession areas such as in West Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan, and Riau.<\/p>\n

Nevertheless, plantation companies continue to face legal consequences under Article 88 of Law Number 32 of 2009, which establishes the principle of strict liability.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf a fire occurs even if the ignition point originates outside and spreads into the concession the company is automatically deemed negligent. Yet, it is inconceivable that any company or community member would intentionally burn their own assets. We propose the inclusion of an addendum or an exemption clause, particularly for situations involving extreme weather conditions,\u201d said Eddy Martono.<\/p>\n

PWI: The importance of fact-reliant press in dealing with negative campaigns against palm oil<\/strong><\/h2>\n

In response to the presentation, the Chairman of the Indonesian Journalists Association (PWI), Akhmad Munir, emphasized the crucial role of the media in conveying objective, data-driven information amidst various global negative campaigns targeting Indonesian palm oil.<\/p>\n

According to him, international trade competition often exploits environmental and labor issues to discredit the national palm oil industry.<\/p>\n

“The primary challenge for the palm oil industries is to demonstrate their good governance that delivers benefits to the general public. The world badly needs the palm oil as it has the highest productivity, efficiency, and versatility compared to all other vegetable oils,” he stated.<\/p>\n

Akhmad Munir stressed that journalism grounded in empirical facts is essential for providing a comprehensive picture of the palm oil industry’s development. At the same time, the media must continue to exercise its critical function by continually advocating the implementation of practices of good corporate governance and further improvement of governance as a whole.<\/p>\n

Sustainable palm oil is a national imperative<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Prof. Dr. Ermanto Fahamsyah, a professor at the University of Jember, stated that palm oil is a blessing for Indonesia, as it contributes significantly to foreign exchange earnings, job creation, and food and energy security.<\/p>\n

\u201cPalm oil is a blessing. We should be grateful, as this commodity makes a major contribution to foreign exchange, employment, and national food and energy security. Our shared task is to manage this blessing through good governance so that its benefits are enjoyed by all of Indonesian people,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

A similar view was expressed by Prof. Dr. Bustanul Arifin, a Senior Economist at INDEF and President of ASAE. He emphasized that the concept of sustainable palm oil is not merely a response to global pressure but a strategic necessity for Indonesia.<\/p>\n

According to him, enhancing the competitiveness of the national palm oil industry requires accelerating the replanting of smallholder plantations, narrowing the yield gap, expanding ISPO and RSPO certification, and strengthening equitable partnerships among smallholders, state-owned enterprises (BUMN), and private companies.<\/p>\n

\u201cSustainable palm oil is a national imperative, not just a reaction to external demands. The key to future competitiveness lies in replanting smallholder plantations, accelerating certification, and strengthening equitable partnerships,\u201d explained Bustanul Arifin.<\/p>\n

Press and national interest in palm oil industries<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Agus Sudibyo, Head of the Education Division at the Indonesian Journalists Association (PWI) Central Board, highlighted the importance of balancing press freedom with national interests when reporting on strategic industries such as palm oil.<\/p>\n

According to him, the media must remain critical and independent while also acknowledging the palm oil industry’s significant contribution to national development.<\/p>\n

He noted that palm oil plays a strategic role as:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Indonesia\u2019s largest non-oil and gas foreign exchange earner.<\/li>\n
  2. A major source of employment.<\/li>\n
  3. A driver of regional economies.<\/li>\n
  4. A supporter of energy security and self-sufficiency through the biodiesel program.<\/li>\n
  5. A provider of vegetable oil and raw materials for the food industry.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    \u201cAttention to environmental issues must be balanced with an appreciation and recognition that palm oil is a key pillar of the national economy,\u201d Agus Sudibyo emphasized.<\/p>\n

    He added that many countries actively protect and promote their flagship products in the interest of the nation. Therefore, the discourse surrounding global vegetable oil needs to be viewed in a more balanced and objective manner.<\/p>\n

    Increasing public understanding on Indonesia\u2019s palm oil industry<\/strong><\/h2>\n

    Through this GAPKI-PWI Journalism Workshop, both organizations hope that journalists will gain a more comprehensive understanding of the challenges, opportunities, and contributions of Indonesia’s palm oil industry. Consequently, the resulting journalistic work can be more objective and balanced, while also educating the public on the strategic role of palm oil in sustainable national economic development.
