In fact, a ban could potentially exacerbate environmental pressures.<sup><a href=\"#ref-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Oil palm now occupies less than 10% of the world\u2019s total land used for oil-producing crops, yet it supplies 35% of global vegetable-oil demand. To yield the same volume of oils, palm needs only one-fifth to one-eighth of the land required by competing crops.<sup><a href=\"#ref-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<h2>Why is it difficult to replace palm oil?<\/h2>\n<p>If palm oil were replaced by other vegetable oils, the land required to produce the same volume would be significantly larger. The IUCN therefore stresses that there are &quot;no quick fixes&quot; for the palm-oil debate. The infographic outlines two scenarios in which a palm-oil ban could trigger unintended, negative consequences:<sup><a href=\"#ref-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<h3>Scenario 1: Prices fall, and the drive toward sustainability weakens<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Palm-oil producers look to other markets and adjust their prices accordingly.<\/li>\n<li>Lower prices attract demand from markets that place less emphasis on sustainability.<\/li>\n<li>As a result, the incentive to produce environmentally friendly palm oil diminishes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Scenario 2: A shift to other oils raises land demand<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Companies switch to purchasing alternative vegetable oils.<\/li>\n<li>These alternatives need up to nine times more land than oil palm.<sup><a href=\"#ref-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup><\/li>\n<li>As a result, the loss of natural habitats, the threat of species extinction, and other environmental pressures could in fact intensify.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Conclusion: Focus on sustainable palm oil<\/h2>\n<p>The main message from the IUCN data is clear: as global demand for vegetable oils keeps growing, palm oil will remain part of the global supply.
