Palm oil is one of the most discussed commodities in the world \u2014 usually around trade, the environment, or exports. What is rarely discussed is how deeply it is already woven into everyday Indonesian life. Many of the products we use from morning to night actually come from the fruit of the oil palm tree: from the soap and shampoo in our bathrooms, to cooking oil in our kitchens, to medicinal capsules, and even vehicle fuel.[1]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

This article traces the journey of palm oil from the plantation to everyday products, examining both the scientific benefits behind it and the challenges that must be addressed honestly and through data-driven analysis.<\/p>\n

Around 40% of the global supply of vegetable oils comes from palm oil, produced on a relatively small land area.[2]<\/a><\/sup> Only 2.4 m² of land is required by oil palm to produce every kilogram of palm oil \u2014 significantly less than that needed by other oil-bearing crops.[2]<\/a><\/sup> There are more than 200 types of palm oil-derived products, ranging from food items to pharmaceuticals.[3]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

Palm oil in our house: closer than imagined<\/h2>\n

From the very start of the day, traces of palm oil can be found. Cooking oil and margarine in the kitchen, bath soap, shampoo, detergent, toothpaste, and even cosmetics and skin moisturizers \u2014 all utilize derivatives of palm oil. According to the Plantation Fund Management Board (BPDP), there are approximately 200 types of palm oil derivatives that serve as raw materials for both food and non-food products.[3]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

The key lies in oleochemicals \u2014 chemicals produced from the processing of palm oil and palm kernel oil (PKO). Derivatives such as fatty acids, fatty alcohols, glycerin, and methyl esters serve as the base ingredients for soaps, shampoos, detergents, and other cleaning products. Glycerin and fatty acid derivatives act as moisturizers and emulsifiers in cosmetics, while in the pharmaceutical industry, oleochemicals are used as raw materials for soft-gel capsules and ointments.[1]<\/a><\/sup>[4]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

Furthermore, the biodiesel fuel currently used in Indonesia under the B50 mandatory program is also derived from palm oil.[4]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

Why oil palm has high productivity?<\/h2>\n

Why does oil palm have much higher productivity compared to other vegetable oils? The answer is agronomic in nature, rather than a matter of land area alone. Oil palm is a long-cycle perennial crop: a single plant remains productive for 25–30 years, maintaining a dense canopy year-round. Mature fruit bunches are harvested repeatedly \u2014 every 10–15 days \u2014 resulting in an oil yield per hectare that far exceeds that of other oil-bearing crops.<\/p>\n

Data from the FAO and recent scientific reviews confirm this. On average, oil palm produces 3–6 tons of oil per hectare annually, compared to approximately 0.5 tons for soybeans, 0.7 tons for rapeseed, and 0.8 tons for sunflowers.[2]<\/a><\/sup>[5]<\/a><\/sup> This means that to produce the same volume of oil, oil palm requires 4–10 times less land than other oil crops.[5]<\/a><\/sup> Furthermore, oil palm requires relatively less fertilizer and pesticide per ton of oil produced compared to other major vegetable-oil commodities.[6]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

The implications for forest conservation are significant. If the global demand for vegetable oil is fulfilled through soybeans, rapeseed, and sunflowers, the amount of land required would be vastly larger. A study published in the journal Agronomy<\/em> (MDPI, 2025) calculates that the land requirement for palm oil is only about 2.4 m² per kilogram of oil annually \u2014 compared to 10 m² for rapeseed and 18 m² for sunflowers.[2]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

Challenges that need addressing<\/h2>\n

The benefits of productivity do not automatically eliminate all problems. In the past, land expansion has put pressure on forest areas and biodiversity \u2014 an issue that continues to drive improvements in governance. The response from the Indonesian industry and government has included the implementation of sustainability certifications \u2014 such as the national ISPO and the globally recognized RSPO \u2014 alongside commitments to halt new land clearing and the adoption of a "zero burning" policy.[7]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

Many researchers agree that the way forward is not a choice between palm oil or no palm oil, but rather the sustainable production of palm oil: preserving forest cover, restoring degraded land, strengthening labor protections, and increasing productivity on existing land to avoid the need for new land clearing.[6]<\/a><\/sup>[7]<\/a><\/sup> This approach aligns with ecological principles: global demand for vegetable oil continues to grow in tandem with the global population, and any land-efficient commodity helps reduce the pressure for agricultural expansion.<\/p>\n

Conclusion<\/h2>\n

Palm oil is present all around us, extending far beyond its common use as a cooking oil. It can be found in our bathrooms, kitchens, medicine cabinets, and even in fuel tanks. Its superior productivity is supported by consistent scientific data \u2014 ranging from reports by the FAO to the latest academic journals \u2014 which show that palm oil provides a significant contribution to the global supply of vegetable oils while requiring a relatively small amount of land.<\/p>\n

Behind every daily product lies an extensive value chain \u2014 stretching from plantations and processing plants to the hands of the consumers. Understanding this chain through accurate data is the first step toward wiser consumption and a more sustainable industry.<\/p>\n
