The Forum this year raised the theme &#8220;Quo Vadis The Transformation of Indonesian Palm Oil Industry?&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Before an audience comprising local government representatives, business operators, plantation owners, academics, oil palm smallholders&#8217; associations, and the media, Eddy emphasized that the future of the palm oil industry is not determined solely by increased production. Productivity, governance, sustainability, downstream development, and global competitiveness must also be collectively strengthened as part of an agenda for the sustainable transformation of the palm oil industry.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Our challenge lies not only in how to increase production, but also in how to enhance productivity, governance, sustainability, downstream development, and global competitiveness,&#8221; he said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Outlined below are the six strategic directions for the transformation of the Indonesian palm oil industry, as presented by Eddy Martono at the forum, along with the global issues that are of particular concern to GAPKI.<\/p>\n<h2>Six directions of transformation in palm oil industry<\/h2>\n<h3>1. Increasing productivity<\/h3>\n<p>According to Eddy, current oil palm productivity is stagnant and shows a downward trend. He believes the future of the oil palm industry should rely on increasing yields per hectare rather than expanding land area. This approach requires the use of superior seeds, good agricultural practices, precise fertilization, mechanization, digitalization, and the implementation of technology and innovation. Eddy emphasizes that research and innovation are investments in the future, not merely costs. One ongoing initiative involves the introduction of pollinating insects and new genetic resources\u2014an effort led by GAPKI in collaboration with the plantation fund management board (BPDP), the Ministry of Agriculture, PT RPN, and other stakeholders.<\/p>\n<h3>2. Accelerating replanting of smallholders&#8217; plantations<\/h3>\n<p>The replanting program for smallholders&#8217; plantations (PSR) must be a national priority, as many smallholder plantations are aging and experiencing declining productivity. Eddy emphasized that the PSR program should not be merely about replacing old trees. It must also improve the income and well-being of the oil palm farmers. This requires simplifying processes, ensuring land tenure legality, providing access to high-quality seeds, offering technical assistance, and strengthening smallholder institutions.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, access to financing is essential\u2014including &#8220;livelihood support&#8221; (living allowances) for farmers during the period before their new oil palm trees become productive. GAPKI has expressed its readiness to strengthen partnerships with smallholders, as both companies and farmers are integral parts of the national oil palm ecosystem.<\/p>\n<h3>3. Strengthen governance and data<\/h3>\n<p>The transformation of the palm oil industry must be built upon governance that is transparent, accountable, and traceable. Eddy noted that accurate data is required regarding land area, production, productivity, land legality, and supply chains. &#8220;Accurate data will lead to sound policies,&#8221; he stated.<\/p>\n<p>While GAPKI supports the government&#8217;s efforts to improve governance, the industry\u2014as well as individual planters\u2014also requires legal certainty and a stable business environment.<\/p>\n<h3>4. Resolving structural problems<\/h3>\n<p>Structural issues still facing the industry include overlapping regulations, the status of designated areas and land legality, social concerns, and trade barriers in international markets. Eddy believes that these problems cannot be resolved by any single party alone.<\/p>\n<h3>5. Maintaining trade competitiveness and exports<\/h3>\n<p>GAPKI understands the government&#8217;s need to strengthen the governance of strategic commodity trade and enhance economic benefits for the nation. However, any policy must also take into account the smooth flow of exports, trade efficiency, industrial competitiveness, and the interests of smallholders. &#8220;We must avoid crafting policies that end up increasing costs and diminishing Indonesia&#8217;s competitiveness in the global market,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>GAPKI advocates for open dialogue and consultation between the government and all stakeholders regarding any strategic policy.<\/p>\n<h3>6. Strengthen downstreaming<\/h3>\n<p>&#8220;Indonesia must not merely be a producer of raw materials,&#8221; said Eddy. Citing data from the Ministry of Industry in his remarks, he noted that there are 195 types of downstream products that can be derived from palm oil\u2014ranging from food products and oleochemicals to biofuels and biomaterials. Downstreaming generates added value, creates jobs, and strengthens Indonesia&#8217;s position within the global value chain.<\/p>\n<p>However, this process requires consistent policies, a conducive investment climate, adequate infrastructure, and broad market access.<\/p>\n<h2>Global challenges and karhutla alert<\/h2>\n<p>Eddy pointed out that issues such as sustainability, traceability, climate change, and various requirements of international market will increasingly shape global competition.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, the palm oil industry must address these challenges through robust data, credible standards, trade diplomacy, and more effective communication.<\/p>\n<p>On the same occasion, he urged all member companies to remain highly vigilant regarding forest and land fires (karhutla), especially during this year (2026) dry season. Hotspots and haze continue to occur in several regions south of the equator, including South, Central, and West Kalimantan, as well as South Sumatra and Jambi. Member companies are requested to strengthen prevention systems, ensure that fire-control equipment is ready for use, and coordinate with local governments, local communities, and other relevant stakeholders. Members are also encouraged to assist in extinguishing fires that may occur on nearby community-owned plantations.<\/p>\n<p>GAPKI further advises companies to conduct immediate ground checks if hotspots are detected within their plantation areas. Should a fire occur, companies must promptly document the chronology of the incident\u2014including the extent of the burned area, the source of the fire, and the firefighting efforts undertaken\u2014and ensure this information is shared with local government authorities and law enforcement. The principle of addressing issues through data and solutions, rather than through mutual blame, is also a core component of the transformation strategy championed by GAPKI.<\/p>\n<h2>Collaboration for palm oil future<\/h2>\n<p>For GAPKI, the transformation of the palm oil industry is ultimately about more than just technology. Eddy frames it as an effort to boost productivity, improve governance, strengthen partnerships with smallholders, increase value-added, and build Indonesia&#8217;s competitiveness in the global market. The enhancement of governance and the international market acceptance of certifications are also being fostered through frameworks such as the ISPO\u2013DCF roadmap.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Let us build the transformation of the palm oil sector in a spirit of collaboration: a strong government, a progressive business sector, prosperous smallholders, and an increasingly competitive Indonesian palm oil industry.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He hopes that the IPOS Forum 2026 will go beyond mere discussion, yielding concrete ideas and recommendations that can be implemented collectively.
