Jejak deforestasi tropical forest dan non-tropical forest tersebut juga diperkuat oleh studi Matthew (1983). Pada periode pra-pertanian sampai tahun 1980 (Tabel 1), deforestasi hutan dunia telah mencapai 701 juta hektar yang terdiri dari deforestasi hutan non-tropis (653 juta hektar) dan deforestasi hutan tropis (48 juta hektar).
Studi Houghton (1996) juga mengkonfirmasi pola deforestasi global tersebut. Dalam periode tahun 1850-1990, luas lahan global yang telah dibuka meningkat dari 289 juta hektar menjadi 2.52 miliar hektar. Lahan tersebut terdiri dari temperate grass land seluas 1.6 miliar hektar, hutan tropis seluas 508 juta hektar, hutan temperate seluas 91 juta hektar, dan hutan boreal seluas 4 hektar.
Sebagian besar deforestasi hutan sub-tropis terjadi di daratan Eropa dan Amerika Utara. Hal ini tercermin dari penurunan forest cover di negara- negara Eropa (Gambar 2) sebelum tahun 1800 (Kaplan et al., 2009) dan di Amerika Utara (Gambar 3) (USDA, 2014). Hal ini juga terkonfirmasi dari hilangnya hutan asli (virgin forest) di daratan Eropa. Studi Sabatini et al. (2018) dan Barredo et al. (2021) juga mengungkapkan bahwa luas hutan primer Eropa saat ini hanya tersisa 1.4 juta hektar yang tersebar di Finlandia, Ukraina, Bulgaria, dan Rumania.
Uraian di atas menegaskan bahwa deforestasi merupakan fenomena normal dari proses pembangunan yang terjadi di setiap negara dan setiap zaman. Negara-negara maju saat ini, seperti Eropa dan Amerika Utara, mengawali proses pembangunannya dari hasil deforestasi. Demikian juga negara-negara dunia baru membangun. Tampaknya tidak ada pilihan untuk membangun pada masa itu tanpa deforestasi. Kemajuan dan kekayaan yang dinikmati masyarakat dunia saat ini memiliki akar sejarah deforestasi global.
