Palm Oil Bioethanol vs Palm Gasoline: What’s the Difference?

Although both are palm oil-based biofuels that can replace fossil gasoline, Palm Oil Bioethanol and Palm Gasoline (a product of the Red-White Catalyst technology) are actually two very different things from the raw materials and production process to the chemical compounds produced.

Comparison Table

Aspect Palm Oil Bioethanol Palm Gasoline (Red-White Catalyst)
Raw material Palm biomass/waste (empty fruit bunches, palm trunks) not the oil Palm oil directly (CPO/RBDPO)
Production process Hydrolysis (breaking cellulose into sugars) ? Fermentation by microbes ? Distillation Catalytic reaction (hydrotreating/deoxygenation) removes oxygen from palm oil
Product compound Ethanol (C2H5OH) an alcohol Pure hydrocarbons, similar in structure to fossil gasoline
Technology category Second-generation bioethanol (lignocellulosic-based) Drop-in biofuel (biohydrocarbon)4
Development status Laboratory research & feasibility studies; not yet commercial5 Already tested up to industrial scale (Pertamina refineries)4
Examples of finished products Exx blends in gasoline (if commercialized) D100 (100% palm oil diesel), palm gasoline road-tested4
Main constraints High production costs, complex lignocellulose hydrolysis5 Requires refinery infrastructure & special catalysts, high initial investment costs

What They Have in Common

Both Palm Oil Bioethanol and Palm Gasoline:

  1. Have the potential to replace fossil gasoline (unlike biodiesel/FAME and bio-jet fuel, which replace diesel and jet fuel)
  2. Utilize Indonesia’s abundant palm oil resources
  3. Contribute to the national energy security strategy and the reduction of fuel imports

The Most Fundamental Difference: Completely Different Chemical Routes

The most fundamental difference lies in the type of chemical reaction:

  1. Palm Oil Bioethanol takes the biological route microbes ferment sugar (the product of cellulose breakdown) into alcohol.
  2. Palm Gasoline takes the chemical-catalytic route palm oil molecules are “cleaned” of oxygen through reactions with a catalyst and hydrogen, so the result is not alcohol, but hydrocarbons whose properties are nearly identical to fossil gasoline.

Because the end product is a pure hydrocarbon (not an alcohol), Palm Gasoline has the advantage of being a drop-in fuel it can be used directly in vehicle engines without modification and without blend limits, unlike bioethanol, which is usually limited in its blend ratio (E5, E10, etc.) because its chemical properties differ from pure gasoline.

Why It Is Important to Understand Both Together

These two technologies show that palm oil actually has two different routes to replace fossil gasoline one through the utilization of its waste (Palm Oil Bioethanol), and another through the direct processing of its oil with domestic catalyst technology (Palm Gasoline). If both are optimally developed, their combination has the potential to make palm oil a mainstay for Indonesia not only for diesel (biodiesel) and jet fuel (bio-jet fuel), but also for gasoline completing the national biofuel ecosystem in a comprehensive way.
